Town of Davidson Events

May 3 (Saturday) – Davidson Town Day Festival, Village Green (10 a.m. – 3 p.m.) – Davidson Parks & Recreation will again host this annual spring event. Festivities will fill the Town Green and Main Street with carnival games, food, arts and entertainment for the whole family. The Flex Flyer, Bungee Run, and Kid Train are all back by popular demand. A variety of professional and local talent will be appearing on the main stage located at the Public Library. Entertainment will include performances by a ventriloquist, dancers, and more. Local vendors will offer a variety of food and a wide range of items for sale such as art, soaps, baskets, and painted gourds. There will be demonstrations by a wood turner and a wood carver and you can make your very own piece of pottery.

Prior to opening ceremonies, Davidson-Cornelius Day Care will host its twelfth annual Davidson Town Day race. Run the one mile Fun Run at 8 a.m. or the certified 5K course at 8:30 a.m. All proceeds support the non-profit Davidson-Cornelius Day Care Center. Streets will be closed from 7:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. to accommodate the vendors and large crowds. The streets that will be closed are Main Street between Concord Road and Chairman Blake and Lorimer Road between Concord Road and the CVS parking lot.

Concert-on-the-Green Series – Village Green – Downtown Davidson, Inc. brings back this popular series for spring-summer 2008. The concerts are held on Sundays from 6 – 8 p.m. and are free and open to the public. Families and friends are welcome to bring picnics and relax to the music. The season was scheduled to open with the Davidson College Symphony and Jazz Ensemble on April 27, but the event was canceled due to weather. Planners hope to reschedule this concert in June. Every Wednesday (8:00 – 11:00 a.m.) – 50 Plus Coffee – Davidson Parks & Recreation Department (416 Armour Street) – If you have not been to the new Parks & Recreation facility, you must give this a try! You can play pool, ping-pong, board games, and read a choice of three different newspapers (if you’re bored) while you enjoy the coffee, bagels, donuts and fruit that are provided. Several residents in New Neighborhood often attend and you will be sure to meet new friends as well. This is meant to be a fun and relaxing time for all! New Program – Davidson Parks & Recreation Department announces the formation of the Davidson Senior Scholars. Meetings will provide programs that stimulate continual intellectual and cultural growth. The general format of the meetings is a lecture (one hour) followed by question and answer (30 minutes). The speakers are generally Davidson College professors and physicians. Register online at www.d-Recs.org or call the office at 704.892.3349. Programs are free. Monthly meetings will take place on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month from 2:00 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

Summer Camps for 2008 – Now is the time to begin sign-ups for summer camp programs. All programs are held at the Town of Davidson Parks and Recreation office, located at 416 Armour Street, unless otherwise specified. Camps will provide a variety of opportunities to enhance each child’s growth and skill level. Outcomes will include the ability to establish positive relationships, sportsmanship and self-esteem through an organized plan of instruction and fun. All instructors have professional training and experience in their area of expertise.

Opportunities exist for pre-school children, elementary school kids, and teens. Camps include a wide range of sports (including fencing and bowling), arts & crafts, Audio Engineering, photography, film making for teens, Forensic Science: CSI, and much more.
