Davidson College Events

December 4 (Sunday) – Christmas Vespers service in the Davidson College Presbyterian Church (7:00 p.m.) – This very special service includes scripture lessons and carols and is a wonderful way to start the holiday season. There is no charge to attend. For more information, please call 704.894.2357.

December 5 (Sunday) – Davidson College invites the public to holiday shop for presents that meet human needs worldwide at its 13th annual Alternative Gift Fair. The fair runs from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. in the Brown Atrium of the Alvarez College Union. This is a great opportunity to purchase “alternative gifts” that help and empower God’s children around the world. Gifts include care for an orphan in China, a clean-water well for a village in Nicaragua, or a flock of chickens for a family in Kenya, as well as many other great gifts. Call 704.894.5689 for more information.

This list does not include all events or opportunities offered by Davidson College each month, but does include activities felt to be of general interest or value.

Subscribe to the Oak Row Report, a monthly compilation of upcoming public events at Davidson College. To receive this publication by mail at no cost, contact News Director Bill Giduz, Office of College Communications, at 704.894.2244.

Pat Conroy and Davidson Basketball

Pat Conroy’s association with Davidson is not limited to having a street named for him in our neighborhood. He played basketball for The Citadel, and would have played two Southern Conference games against the Davidson Wildcats each year.

His book My Losing Season begins, “I was born to be a point guard, but not a very good one.” Most of the book tells about the 1966-1967 basketball season when he was a senior. Two chapters describe games against Davidson College. Chapter 18, “Davidson,” recounts the January 11, 1967, game in Charleston. “Lefty Calls My Name,” Chapter 27, is about the game at Davidson College in Johnston Gym, now part of the student center. It was Conroy’s last regular season game of his basketball career.

On the cover of the paperback edition is a blurb from the Houston Chronicle:  “. . . A wonderfully rich memoir that you don’t have to be a sports fan to love.” And they’re right.

Thanks go to our neighbor and webmaster Steve Lee for this interesting update on the author honored by our neighborhood street named Conroy Avenue.
