Neighborhood Discussion Group

October 13 (Thursday) – The Neighborhood Discussion Group will meet at St Alban’s Church, beginning at 7:00 p.m. This month’s discussion will be led by Dr. Lance K. Stell on the topic “The Case of Terri Schiavo: Does North Carolina Need More Disability Law?”

Dr. Stell is Medical Humanities Program Director and Charles A. Dana Professor of Philosophy at Davidson College. He is also the Vice-Chair of the Ethics Committee and Director of the Ethics Consult Service, Department of Internal Medicine, Carolinas Medical Center. An article on this topic by Dr. Stell was published in the July/August 2005 issue of Mecklenburg Medicine as part of a continuing program by the Bioethics Resource Group (BRG). For the past 20 years, this group has worked with local healthcare professionals, area hospital ethics committees, and the general public to provide leadership and educational resources for dealing with ethical issues in healthcare.

Terri Schiavo died on March 31, 2005, thirteen days after withdrawal of her feeding tube for the final time. Since then, legislative initiatives have been introduced in several states, including House Bill 1175 in North Carolina. You may wish to better understand the impact and implications of this proposed legislation in our state. Early in 2005, nearly everyone had some opinion on the Terri Schiavo Case. As a question of medical ethics, there appeared to be no clear-cut answers.

Arvind Patil has been working for a number of months to arrange this program with Lance Stell. We are indeed fortunate to have an opportunity to discuss this issue with him. Please plan to attend what will certainly be an interesting discussion and a true educational experience.

ADVANCE NOTICE FOR NOVEMBER!
SPECIAL NEIGHBORHOOD DISCUSSION GROUP

November 3 (Thursday) St. Alban’s Church, 7:00 p.m. - In order to prepare for Election Day (November 8), we will move our November meeting to the first Thursday of the month. The program will be an open discussion by members of the community running for contested positions on the Town Board. This informal roundtable format will include a presentation by each candidate on the Town of Davidson and where it should go in the future, followed by an open question and answer session. Refreshments and time to meet the candidates will follow the discussion. At this time, the following persons are expected to be present: John Woods, Margo Williams, Evan Webster, Bruce McMillen, and Cary Johnston. This is indeed a special opportunity for our neighborhood. Let’s have a great turn-out and show the community that we are informed voters!

If you have ideas about topics, please contact Arvind Patil at 704.892.9608 (aspatil@bellsouth.net) or Sherman Kahn at 704.655.8965 (wa8lit@aol.com).

All Neighbors Welcome

Every Morning (7:00 a.m.) – The Board Walkers meet at the corner of Twain Avenue and the intersection of Mary Jane McConnell and Miriam G. Tuttle Byways to begin their 50 to 60 minute walk around the area. If you would like more information, please call Bonne McCoy at 704-987-1877.

November 2 (Wednesday) – Neighborhood Dinner Out – Thank you Patti Mercer! Plans have been completed for a Neighborhood Dinner at the newly opened Kudzu Restaurant on Main Street. Neighbors will join together at 6:30 p.m. This should prove to be a special activity and great meal.

Kudzu’s maximum seating is 50, so reservations will be made on a first-come basis. The last turnout at Mama Mia’s was close to 40 people, and the neighborhood has grown considerably since then. If you are interested in attending, please call Patti Mercer at 704.894.9411 no later than Thursday, October 20, to reserve a seat. Chip Potts (owner) will create several different dinner options for us to choose from, and Patti will hand-deliver these menu choices on Friday, October 21. You will need to return your selections on or before Monday, October 24, to the large wicker basket on Patti Mercer’s front porch (214 South Faulkner Way).

Based on feedback received after the last Neighborhood Dinner at Mama Mia’s, everyone appreciated the very detailed organization in advance of the dinner. Thanks to everyone for observing the deadlines above. We look forward to dining with good friends and lots of new neighbors!

Women's

October’s breakfast will again be at the Cookhouse Restaurant (Shoppes on the Green complex, exit 28 in Cornelius) at 9:00 a.m. We hope to see this activity grow as popular as the Men’s Group Breakfast. If you plan to attend or have suggestions about the breakfast, please call Patti Mercer at 704.894.9411. October 19 (Wednesday) The Women’s Wednesday Bridge Club will meet at 1:00 p.m. at the home of Marcia Williamson, 308 O. Henry Avenue. If you plan to play, please call Marcia at 704.892.0450. October 20 (Thursday) - The New Da Daytimers Book Club will meet from 3 to 5 p.m. with the Bookclubs of Davidson at the annual Fall Tea at the Pines. The New Da Women’s Group has no planned activity in October. Luann Christine (704.987.1527) and Pat Stenhouse (704.895.1900) have done an excellent job of planning activities for this group for a couple of years and are now looking for someone who is willing to take over the organization. Please volunteer!
