Davidson College Events

October 5 (Wednesday) ­ Orchestra Concert ­ The Davidson College Symphony Orchestra will present a free concert. The concert will include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 7, and Nielsen’s “Helios” Overture, and features a performance by the Davidson College Wind Ensemble. The concert begins at 8:00 p.m. in the Duke Family Performance Hall. Call 704.894.2357 for information.

October 13 (Thursday) ­ Art Opening ­ Davidson College invites the public to the opening reception for art exhibitions by the Indian sculptor, Balasubraniam, and animated film producer William Kentridge. Balasubraniam is a leading young artist living and working in Bangalore, whose works are primarily comprised of casts from his own body. Kentridge produces animated films that illustrate both the direct effects and residual aura of apartheid in his native South Africa. Both artists will talk about their work during the reception, which will be held from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the Belk Visual Arts Center. The exhibitions will run through December 7, and are open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. weekdays and noon to 4:00 p.m. on weekends. For more information, please call 704.894.2519.

October 13 (Thursday) ­ Theatre Production ­ In celebration of Jean-Paul Sartre’s 100th birthday, the Dean Rusk International Studies Program and the French Department at Davidson College will present Inter-Europe Spectacle’s performance of Sartre’s best-known play, “Huis Clos.” The performance is free and will begin at 8:00 p.m. in Hodson Hall of the Cunningham Fine Arts Building. October 19 ­ 23 (Wednesday ­ Sunday) ­ Theatre Production ­ The Davidson College Theatre Department presents “She Loves Me,” directed by professor of theatre Ann Marie Costa. The play is based on the book by Joe Masteroff and a play by Miklos Laszlo. The performances are October 19-20 at 7:30 p.m., October 21-22 at 8:15 p.m., and October 23 at 2:00 p.m., all in Duke Family Performance Hall. Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for seniors, $9 for faculty and staff, and $6 for students. October 22 (Saturday) ­ Charity Bicycle Ride ­ Davidson College is sponsoring a “Ride for Hope and Housing.” Bicyclists are invited to ride a 25 kilometer, 50 kilometer, or 100 kilometer course through the rolling countryside of Rowan and Cabarrus Counties to help raise funds for the Davidson Housing Coalition. October 27 (Thursday) ­ Reynolds Lecture ­ Mexican playwright, essayist, literary historian, and novelist Carlos Fuentes will present Davidson’s annual Reynolds Lecture at 8:00 p.m. in Duke Family Performance Hall. Fuentes was appointed as Mexico’s ambassador to France from 1975-1977. Since 1987, he has served as the Robert F. Kennedy Professor of Latin American Studies at Harvard University. He is widely known for his novels and innovative narrative techniques to examine Mexican History. There is no charge to attend, but tickets are required. GET READY FOR BASKETBALL!
THERE IS ANOTHER GREAT SEASON COMING UP!

The 2004-05 team, which went to the third round of the NIT, returns all but two players that graduated and adds four incoming freshmen scholarship players to strengthen the already strong line-up. The Men’s 2005-06 schedule is brutal, with road games at Duke, North Carolina, UNC-Charlotte, Syracuse, and University of Illinois at Chicago. The Wildcats home schedule includes Missouri, St. Joseph’s, U-Mass, and Princeton! All this plus a 16-game Southern Conference schedule!

The Women’s team is also expecting a strong season.

Come out and support Davidson College Basketball. Schedules will be published as the games start in November. These games are great entertainment and there are season tickets available, both on an individual basis and on a family plan.

If you are already a Davidson College basketball fan, or would like to become one, you might also want to check out the following upcoming dates and activities:

October 28 (Friday) – A Night with the ‘Cats – This will be an opportunity to meet the Men’s and Women’s basketball teams, including player introductions and activities for kids of various ages. Some food will be available for purchase. The event will be in the Belk Arena from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. The family will not be disappointed.

November 10 (Thursday) – Meet the Wildcats Dinner at River Run Country Club (6:30 – 9:30 p.m.) – This event is for River Run Country Club members and their guests. If you are not a member, you can still attend as a guest as long as you know a member to contact. This annual event is extremely well attended, so make plans early! The evening includes Coach Bob McKillop making individual player introductions, a preview of the upcoming season, and usually a highlight video of the previous basketball season. Dress is casual. Cost of dinner is as follows: Adults ($13.95), Children ages 6-12 ($8.95), Children ages 5 and under ($3.95).
