Neighborhood Discussion Group

November 3 (Thursday) – The Neighborhood Discussion Group will meet at St Alban's Church, beginning at 7:00 p.m. In order to prepare for Election Day (November 8), the program will be an open discussion by members of the community running for contested positions on the Town Board.

This informal roundtable format will include a presentation by each candidate regarding the Town of Davidson and where it should go in the future, followed by an open question and answer session. Refreshments and time to meet the candidates will follow the discussion. The following persons are expected to be present: Cary Johnston, Bruce McMillen, Evan Webster, Margo Williams, and John Woods.

This is indeed a special opportunity for our neighborhood. Let’s have a great turn-out and show the community that we are informed voters!

Attendance was good at the October Discussion Group featuring Dr. Lance K. Stell on the topic of the Terri Schiavo case. Discussion was lively and informative.

As an interesting update to that program, Dr. Stell, the Charles A. Dana Professor of Philosophy at Davidson College and Medical Ethicist at Carolinas Medical Center, was just named the 2005 recipient of the John Huske Anderson Award by the North Carolina Medical Society (NCMS).

The award recognizes the North Carolinian whose contributions have had a positive impact on the medical profession and the public health in a manner exemplified by John Huske Anderson, legal advisor for many years to the Medical Society.

Congratulations to Dr. Lance Stell on this award!

November 2 (Wednesday) – Neighborhood Dinner Out –We look forward to seeing those neighbors who have signed-up for our Kudzu Restaurant dinner on Main Street. Cocktails and appetizers start at 6:00 p.m., with dinner to follow.

New Activity!

Have you ever wanted to learn to play Mah Jong?

Joyce Feir, one of our new neighbors on Wolfe Street, would like to teach the game to any and all who are interested, so that, hopefully, a group can be started. It is a fun game, not too complicated, and popular in many places. However, it does differ from the internet game. November 16 (Wednesday) – New Da Daytimers Book Club will meet at 10:00 a.m. at the home of Rita Simpson (128 South Faulkner Way). This month’s book is To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. November 16 (Wednesday) – The Women’s Wednesday Bridge Club will meet at 1:00 p.m. at the home of Erna Brandenburg, 133 Harper Lee Street. If you plan to play, please call Erna at 704.892.0194. Contact Jean Gilcrest (704.895.0839) for information about the Bridge Club.

November 21 (Monday) – Women’s Group Breakfast – The neighborhood women had another great breakfast in October and will continue to meet on the third Monday of each month. November’s breakfast will again be at the Cookhouse Restaurant (Shoppes on the Green complex, exit 28 in Cornelius) at 9:00 a.m. So far, attendance has been manageable by the restaurant, so there is no need to call Patti Mercer if you are planning to attend. However, if you have questions about the restaurant location and directions, or if you need a ride, please call Patti at 704.894.9411. We look forward to seeing more new faces on November 21st.

The New Da Women’s Group needs a volunteer! Luann Christine (704.987.1527) and Pat Stenhouse (704.895.1900) did an excellent job of planning activities for this group for a couple of years and are now looking for someone who is willing to take over the organization. This was a popular neighborhood activity and we would like to continue regular events. Please give Luann or Pat a call if you are interested.

Men's

November 10 (Thursday) – Men’s Group Breakfast – The neighborhood men will meet again at the Cookhouse Restaurant (Shoppes on the Green complex, exit 28 in Cornelius) at 7:30 a.m. The group will continue to meet the second Thursday of every month. Attendance has grown and the restaurant has requested that we give them an estimate of the number in advance.
