Davidson College Sports Scene

The Davidson College student body is gone for the summer and athletics are obviously at a season low. However, this is a good time to re-cap some of the successes of Davidson teams during the 2004-2005 school year. For those who love sports and competition, you are missing some great entertainment if you are not attending the games and events at the college. This is what sport is meant to be – played for the love of the game by student athletes, some who have scholarships, but most who are “walk-ons.” This is amateur athletics in its purest form.

Davidson’s golf team finished third in the Southern Conference Tournament. Davidson coach, Tim Straub, was named Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year and three members of the team were named to the Academic All Southern Conference Golf Team.

The Davidson men’s basketball team posted a 23-9 record during 2004-2005 and was 16-0 in the Southern Conference. The team qualified for the National Invitational Tournament (NIT) and went all the way to the third round where they were defeated by a stubborn Maryland team. Two players were named to the All Southern Conference Team and Brendan Winters was named All American, Honorable Mention, by the AP. Coach Bob McKillop was named Southern Conference Coach-of-the-Year for the fifth time and he was also honored as the winner of the 2005 Bob Quincy Sportsman-of-the-Year Award by the Sportsman Club of Charlotte. Coach McKillop, who has spoken to our Neighborhood Discussion Group, is the Southern Conference all-time leader in regular season conference wins. With only two players leaving to graduation, Davidson College should have another good year in 2005-2006.

Women’s basketball also had a successful year with a record of 18-11 (14-6 in the Southern Conference). The team lost by only one point to Western Carolina in the semi-finals of the tournament. Sophomore, Katie Hamilton, was named to the All-State Team.

The baseball team also had a winning season at 26-24. The team batting average of .325 was 10th best in the nation. Third baseman, Jay Heafner, finished the season with a remarkable .448 batting average (third in the nation). Heafner was named to the third team All America. Senior pitcher, Andy Carter, was drafted by the New York Yankees.

For the twelfth time in the last thirteen years, Davidson College has received the Barrett-Bonner Award. This award is given to the Southern Conference school that places the highest percentage of its students on the league’s Academic Honor Roll. The Graduation Rate Award also went to Davidson. This award is presented to the member institution with the highest graduation rate for its student athletes over the past five years. Davidson graduated 91% of its student athletes during this time period.
