January 15 – February 26 Magdalena Abakanowicz – Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Arts Center (Van Every Gallery) – Considered to be one of the most important and influential female artists working today, Davidson College is proud to present this unique opportunity to view a selection of sculptures produced during the past decade. Abakanowicz has received countless awards of distinction and is represented in major collections around the world. Join the opening reception and lecture in Semans Auditorium on Thursday, January 14 (7:00 p.m.).
The Van Every/Smith Galleries are open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from noon to 4 p.m. Programs are free and the public is welcome. For information, call 704.894.2519.

January 20 (Wednesday) - 2009-2010 Concert Series: Escher Trio Amsterdam – The performance will be held in Tyler-Tallman Recital Hall, Sloan Music Center at 7:30 p.m. Tickets may be purchased online, by calling 704.894.2135, in person at the Union Box Office (Monday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.), or at the door.

January 25 (Monday) – 2009-2010 C. Shaw and Nancy K. Smith Artist Series, “The Opera Show” – The Opera Show presents the most beautiful music ever written exquisitely performed in a spectacular 21st century showcase. It was created by an eclectic team of theatre artists, stylists, designers and classical musicians and features a high-caliber performing company of 4 vocalists, 5 dancers and 8 musicians. Premiering in England in 2008, the show is presented in three acts, each with its own distinct visual and musical personality. This is the first tour of the United States. February 23 (Tuesday) – 2009-2010 C. Shaw and Nancy K. Smith Artist Series, “Soweto Gospel Choir” – When it comes to vocal talent, Africa, and more particularly South Africa, has spawned the most evocative sounds on earth. Soweto Gospel Choir is the very best that the world has to offer in this art form. Earthy rhythms and rich harmonies are accompanied by an exciting four-piece band and percussion section and include energetic dancing and vibrant, colorful costumes.
