October 16 – December 9 – Two Great Exhibitions! – Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Arts Center:
STARING (Van Every Gallery) – Inspired by Rosemarie Garland-Thomson’s (Professor of Women’s Studies at Emory University) latest book Staring: How We Look, STARING extends Garland-Thomson’s novel exploration into the valuable possibilities of the complicated, and often forbidden, art of staring. STARING includes paintings and drawings by Doug Auld and Chris Rush, and the photographs of Weegee, Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, and additional artists.
PICTURING DAVIDSON: Bill Giduz and His First 30 Years (Smith Gallery) – Visit this community-wide celebration and retrospective of photographs by Bill Giduz, Davidson alumnus and Director of Media Relations since 1979.The Every/Smith Galleries are open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from noon to 4 p.m. Programs are free and the public is welcome. December 6 (Sunday) – Alternative Gift Fair (2:00 – 4:00 p.m.) – The 17th annual Alternative Gift Fair will give buyers the opportunity to purchase relief and self-development goods, services, and animals for people in need throughout the world as “alternative gifts.” Holiday cards are inscribed with information about the gifts purchased, which the buyer may send to friends and family to let them know that an alternative gift has been given in their honor. The event will be held in the Brown Atrium of the Alvarez College Union. For information, call 704-894-2423.
December 6 (Sunday) – Christmas Vespers – Davidson College Presbyterian Church – The Davidson College Chorale, Brass Ensemble, and Flute Choir will participate in the annual Vespers service. The pre-service music begins at 7:00 p.m. and the service begins at 7:30 p.m. There is no charge to attend. For information, please call 704.894.2357.
