October 16 – December 9 Two Great Exhibitions! – Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Arts Center:

STARING (Van Every Gallery) – Inspired by Rosemarie Garland-Thomson’s (Professor of Women’s Studies at Emory University) latest book Staring: How We Look, STARING extends Garland-Thomson’s novel exploration into the valuable possibilities of the complicated, and often forbidden, art of staring. STARING includes paintings and drawings by Doug Auld and Chris Rush, and the photographs of Weegee, Diane Arbus, Garry Winogrand, and additional artists.

PICTURING DAVIDSON: Bill Giduz and His First 30 Years (Smith Gallery) – Visit this community-wide celebration and retrospective of photographs by Bill Giduz, Davidson alumnus and Director of Media Relations since 1979.

The Every/Smith Galleries are open weekdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and weekends from noon to 4 p.m. Programs are free and the public is welcome. For information, call 704.894.2519.

November 12 (Wednesday) – 2009-2010 C. Shaw and Nancy K. Smith Artist Series, “To Kill a Mockingbird” – The stage adaptation of Harper Lee’s Pulitzer Prize-winning classic by Christopher Sergel compels and delights audience members with its warmth, wit and wisdom. Witness this classic tale unfold and its colorful characters develop as the award-winning Montana Repertory Theatre brings this story to life right before your eyes. Tickets: General Public - $20; Faculty/Staff - $15. The performance is held in the Duke Family Performance Hall beginning at 8 p.m. For ticket information, call 704.894.2135.
