Davidson College Events

April 20 – May 3 Student Juried Exhibition, William H. Van Every Gallery (Belk Visual Arts Center) – This annual exhibition of works by both art majors and non-art majors highlights works produced during the academic year. Pieces are selected by members of the studio faculty and awards of excellence are presented by a guest juror. The opening reception for the exhibition will be Thursday, April 20, from 3 – 5 p.m.

NOTE: Both the Van Every and Smith Galleries are located in the Belk Visual Arts Center at the corner of Main and Griffith Streets in Davidson. The galleries are handicap accessible, and free parking is available at the southwest corner of the building. All exhibitions are free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and noon to 4 p.m. on weekends. May 2 (Tuesday) – Bob Dylan Concert – Born Robert Allen Zimmerman in 1941, Bob Dylan became an informal balladeer, documentarian, and reluctant figurehead of American unrest in the 1960s. He plays the guitar, keyboard, and harmonica. Backed by a changing lineup of musicians, he has toured steadily since the late 1980s. The show begins at 8:00 p.m. in the Belk Arena. Tickets are $45. NOTE: Tickets to this event were sold out early. However, a block of tickets opened up a few days before the concert.

May 4 (Thursday) – Charlotte Symphony Orchestra Concert – Scott Allen Jarrett conducts the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra and the Oratorio Singers Chamber Chorus. General admission is $15. The performance starts at 8:00 p.m. in Duke Family Performance Hall. For more information, please call 704.972.2000.

May 13 – 14 (Saturday – Sunday) – Commencement Weekend – The Davidson College community celebrates the Class of 2006 during commencement weekend festivities. At 4:45 p.m. on Saturday, May 13, the Rev. John Howard Collett, senior pastor of Belmont United Methodist Church in Nashville, Tennessee, will lead a Baccalaureate service in the Davidson College Presbyterian Church. A candlelight promenade on the historic quadrangle will follow the service at dusk. At 7:30 p.m., the Concert Choir and Chamber Singers will perform in the Davidson College Presbyterian Church.

On Sunday, May 14, the faculty in full academic regalia and the Class of 2006 will process from Chambers Building at 9:50 a.m. Commencement exercises will begin at 10:00 a.m. under the oaks on the college’s front campus. All events are free. Call 704.894.2201 for more information.

May 21 (Sunday) – Dance Davidson’s young performers will present “Alice in Wonderland.” Tickets are $12 for general admission or $6 for standing room. Performances will be held at 2:00 p.m. and at 6:00 p.m. in Duke Family Performance Hall. For information, call 704.892.5632.
