The current BP Gulf oil spill certainly brings to light the delicate balance within our environment and the realization that it can so easily be changed forever or even destroyed. As a retired engineer, I have followed the technical “babble” surrounding the numerous “best” ways to approach a solution and the ridiculous politics of trying to estimate the magnitude of the spill and its impact on the environment. As an informed citizen, I am insulted by those who would have us believe that this situation can be “fixed.” I am sure that the well will eventually cease to flow. However, I will never believe that things will someday return to normal in the region. This is a disaster of epic proportions and should resound solidly as a wake-up call for all of us.

The best thing we can give our grandchildren is a safe and comfortable planet to live on. So far, we seem only capable of total destruction of that small home we call Earth.
