Davidson College Events

January 18 – February 29 – Joel Shapiro: Wood / Painted Wood – Van Every/Smith Galleries, Katherine and Tom Belk Visual Arts Center – Joel Shapiro is considered one of the leading figures in American sculpture. This exhibition will draw together wood and painted wood sculptures from the last decade. On view will be works that exemplify the artist’s tireless aesthetic investigation and refinement of form. A full color catalogue will accompany the exhibition. Joel Shapiro is also featured in the Davidson College Sculpture Garden.

January 20 – February 17 – Royal Shakespeare Company at Davidson Residency – This month-long celebration, now in its fourth year of a five-year program, offers performances and free public events.

The 2008 RSC at Davidson Residency features a new play project. Written by playwright Rona Munro and commissioned by the RSC, the play will be developed in association with Davidson College with a cast under the direction of Roxana Silbert. Three “work-in-progress” performances of the play Little Eagles (working title) will be presented in the Duke Family Performance Hall on the following dates:

February 15 (Friday) at 7:30 p.m.
February 16 (Saturday) at 7:30 p.m.
February 17 (Sunday) at 2:00 p.m.

February 13 (Wednesday) – Concert Series: Hugo Wolf Quartet – Tyler-Tallman Hall, Sloan Music Center (7:30-9:00 p.m.) – Within just a few years, the Hugo Wolf Quartet has developed from an insider’s tip to one of the most sought after string quartets of its generation. Critics the world over have provided testimony to its rapid development.
